Summary0000318: Plugins don't behave as expected
DescriptionI've found the following behaviour from many of the plugins in Steve Harris' collection:
1) Automation has no effect - this has effected every plugin I've tried it on. The only plugin I've gotten to work with this was gain and pan, which are built-in. This excludes no plug-ins I've tried.
2) Doing things to the audio stream while it's playing causes plugins to crash - after which the meters show spikes, and no sound can be heard unless the plugin is deactivated. Randomly, this will be accompanied by random popping noises rather than silence.
3) Sometimes the effect in step #2 also happens for no apparent reason with no user stimulus - i.e. an audio stream plays for a few minutes and then a plugin crashes.
4) Every plugin that behave badly after a while ALWAYS behaves the same way on ardour startup. The only way to return a "broken" plugin to it's original, working state appears to be to remove it from all channels, restart ardour, and then put it back. Even if it doesn't stop working, you'll have to remove it before you stop, or it will crash when you start up the next time.
Additional InformationI'm testing the beta11.2 build on Gentoo using the 2.6.3 vanilla kernel, and a Creative Ensoniq 1370, and all tests have been of mono channels.

I assume that you're not in the business of fixing broken plugins, if that is the problem, but I also assume you're in the business of detecting when one isn't working and keeping it from messing up everything else.

I have observed that the following plugins behave badly (all of these are from the Steve Harris collection, which, AFIAK, is the largest collection of LADSPA plugins, and consequently the set I've tried to use the most):
multiband EQ
Auto Phaser
Multivoice Chorus
Pitch Scalar

please report on the situation, if possible, with the current CVS tarball.

we know (and steve knows) that the MBEQ plugin is broken. the others i don't know about at this point.

i should probably add some cycle-counting code to catch errant plugins, though given that JACK is doing more or less the same and will kick us out if running in RT mode, its not clear it will help much.

I can confirm the same behaviour in the beta13 release. Actually, now when the plugin goes haywire, the only way to get sound back is to close and restart ardour. In addition, the gain coming out of all plugins seems to be slightly higher than the gain coming in. Is there some new scaling factor being applied after each plugin?

Is that close enough to the CVS version to show the problem?

I imagine that this is going to be a difficult bug to figure out, since it's random and based upon other software.

May I request that you deal with 0000371 (a.k.a 0000235) first? I love using ardour, but because of this bug I have to both manually delete files from dead_sounds and regularly make redundant backups of ardour directories for fear of no recovery. It's a lot bigger problem than the random crashes. The other option, just leaving everything, is more than a little hassle, since it leaves an average of half a gig of wasted files for each project.

Okay, my most strenuous test, which in the past caused this erratic behavior does not anymore. Some of the plugins that should do not keep the gain the same, but that's obviously not Ardour's responsibility.

Good job!
