Summary0006429: Track only plays through left speaker when Amplitube is inserted
DescriptionTrack plays out of both speakers before Amplitube is added. As soon as Amplitube is inserted only sound comes out of left speaker. It is a mono file that was imported into Ardour. Looks like track is being changed to stereo when adding Amplitube with only the left channel playing.

Tried importing a stereo track. Without Amplitube both the right and left channels play at the same level. When I add Amplitube, the left channel gets boosted in volume significantly.

The first log file is from the mono track. I will post a second log file from a session with a stereo track.

just a note: in general, those sorts of debugger logs are useful only in the event of a crash.

"those sorts of debugger logs are useful only in the event of a crash"...
...or if Ardour hangs (deadlock).

Anyway, since the plugin at hand is not freely available. Can you make a screenshot of the mixer-strip with the plugin inserted? It sounds like it's a Mono in -> Stereo out plugin. Is that correct?

or is the signal on a mono-track split like http://robin.linuxaudio.org/tmp/signal_split.png ?

If you add it on a stereo-track.. Do you get 4 outputs?

Best guess: the plugin does not support in-place processing andArdour should refuse to load it in the first place.

I've uploaded an image with it on a mono and stereo channel. There is a button in Amplitube where I can change it from mono to stereo. In mono it should, or at least it does in Reaper, play out on both left and right. In Ardour it just plays on the left. However, this is perhaps a non issue as I found that when I change Amplitube to stereo and put it on a stereo track it works fine.

I think I may have wasted your time and apologize for that. I'll be more thorough next time. Coming from Reaper I haven't had to deal with the mono vs stereo tracks as all tracks in Reaper are stereo.

There's an option in Ardour to tell it to replicate missing channels when running plugins. See the bottom of Edit > Preferences > Audio

This may have some impact on the behaviour you hear. But it also may not, because in general plugin controls like the one you mention in Amplitude do not tend to lead to an I/O reconfiguration as seen by the host (Ardour or Reaper). But it would be worth trying to see what happens.

Thanks for the screeshot. I see it also has a midi input.

1 Midi in, 2 audio in on a mono ardour audio-track. mmmh that may currently throw Ardour off. I'll see if I can find a similar free plugin to reproduce.

Good to know that the stereo version works fine on stereo tracks.

Okay, upon further investigation it seems it needs to be a stereo track with both left and right channels set to the same capture port. It doesn't matter whether Amplitube is in mono or stereo.

The "replicate missing channels" setting doesn't seem to have any effect.

Just for the record, you can get a free version of Amplitube if you want to jump through a few hoops.

You can get a free version of Sampletank 3 as well. I know its crashing ardour and Mixbus when inserting.

Hmmm..., it seems if I add MTuner (Melda Productions) first in the chain and it's disabled then the track plays only through the left channel. As soon as I enable it the track plays through both channels. If I disable it again it still plays through both channels. Have a look at the screenshot. This is happening even on a mono channel with Amplitube set to mono.

All acqua plugins have the same issue, there is a free acqua - red eq which can be downloaded from the link below:-

http://www.acustica-audio.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=297

User has to register and login first > add the red eq into the basket and check out, lastly download it from the Dashboard of user account.

They also have the 10 day trial version of the other plugins

I believe that Acustica Audio is willing to communicate with Ardour & Harrison to provide NFR for testing.
