I'm not finding it easy to coerce GTK into doing this right. I'm tempted to move the tools from the left hand side of the ruler labels (zoom etc.) and put them somewhere else, which would make life a lot easier. |

I Think that is probably a good and pragmatic idea. The zoom icons should probably just be up on the tool bars. |

it was mostly about saving space, for the record. but i agree that it does probably make it too difficult for us programmers. |

Sure. I'm quite close to making it work ok, but I can't get the GTK table to play ball. Not for the first time, mind you ... |
