Summary0002751: Use 'Most recently added regions are higher' as default layering mode
DescriptionAs of now, Ardour will start with the 'Most recently added/moved/trimmed regions are higher' mode as default.

"Basic edits cause regions to rise to the top":

I think this isn't a good choice, because it can cause severe layering problems while recording. If you record a single longer region and overdub it with about 5 shorter regions, and then e.g. trim the region start of the longest underlying region, it will move up over all other regions. Sometimes I ended up not noticing it until it's nearly too late!

I think it would be better also for new users to have the 'Most recently added regions are higher' mode as default. Most recently added regions will be higher except you tell them to do something else.

I think this is more a matter of personal preferences. I would prefer the current behaviour over "most recently added are higher", but I would agree that only an actual move should raise a region, but not trimming.

Personally I prefer working with "later is higher" most of the time. So I think it would be best if the default behaviour could be configurable by the user.

the_CLA: Have you tried A3 beta3 yet? There is only one layering model left (Most recently added regions are higher) and IIRC it has not stirred any discussion yet. I will close this bug as it was meant for Ardour2, but A2 is feature frozen.

djib: Thanks for sponsoring, consider donating this money now for A3 development :) And if there is a discussion about it in the release note of a new beta or on IRC, tell them you like the "most recently added are higher" / manual mode.

The change was intended for A2, but it's feature frozen. A3 will probably/hopefully stay the way it's right now (b3) and therefore fulfills my wish.
