| Summary | 0000912: 0000809 POSTED AGAIN: Faint background noise from the metronome. | ||||
| Description | << marked resolved due to lack of feedback. suspected cause: reporter was using a microphone to record, and picked up metronome audio from monitors >> I get the same effect and yes, I'm using the microphone input but I can't understand your last words ("picked up metronome audio from monitors"). I don't know what I have misconfigured (I let ardour do automatically the connections) and I think that many people will have this problem and won't know what to do to solve it, so this is why I consider it as a bug... By the way, how can I solve it? Thanks in advance. I'm using the microphone input on a plain audigy OEM. | ||||

i hardly know where to begin. imagine you were recording yourself and a large truck or plane passed by. you hear it. it ends up in the recording. did ardour make a mistake? no! ardour records the signal from the microphone, and the microphone hears what you hear (more or less). if you make ardour generate a metronome, and the metronome can be heard by the microphone, then the sound of the metronome will show up in the recording. if you don't want this to happen, you have to make sure that the metronome is being played back in a way that prevents the microphone from hearing it. the most common solution is to use headphones to listen to the metronome. this is easy to do, but it then opens up a set of problems with monitoring (listening to some combination of what is being recorded and what is already recorded). i am not convinced i can explain this issue to you - you might be better trying to find a basic book on recording, possibly centered on one of the win/macos applications, just to get a basic grasp of the techniques and approaches. |

uhm. I won't get angry but I think that your are clearly confused. Now I see you were talking about monitors as speakers! not software-hardware monitoring tools!! I know how to record from a mic while listening to the headphones. I'm actually doing it but in some records I noticed that even that the mic didn't hear anything, clicks were recorded on the background. maybe I had my emu10k mixer bad configured but what I am certainly not is recording without headphones. That would be silly. Anyway, if I can reproduce this problem another time I'll give you more details of it. I'm afraid that the problem is(or at least was with earlier versions of ardour) more serious than this. |

This is not an ardour issue at all, but a general studio electronics issue. You either have crosstalk in your soundcard or mixer, didn't put some control all the way down to zero, or you have a good microphone and "open" headphones. You can check if it is the last by recording silence with you mic with the metronome running and the headphone unplugged. |
|
|
Happens when you have the audio output up too high; it's a physical issue, not an issue with the software. Try either using headphones with better sonic isolation, or turning the volume of the click track down (under Options, Alt-O, under the Click tab). |

>You can check if it is the last by recording silence with you mic with the metronome running and the headphone unplugged. I did it, and I continue hearing faint clicks from the metronome. To reproduce it: -try with an audigy -create a new mono track -set the input from capture_in (with the microphone maximum volume +20dB boost) -add the following LADSPA plugin: "Simple amplifier" from Steve Harris. -Set the plugin gain to 18,7 or more. -Unplug your headphones, speakers or whatever -Activate the metronome with the "click" option -Record some seconds -Listen carefully Maybe it is an issue with this LADSPA plugin or some crosstalk produced by either the emu10k1 driver or the hardware of the soundcard... |

I don't get this problem. I tried a delta1010 and Gina20 soundcards. I recorded audio from the cards a/ds with the click playing and then normalised the result, and hear no click, just a load of background noise. Try playing other sharp percussive sounds at the same level as the click and see if they get recorded with the incoming audio too. I'd suspect crosstalk somewhere... either in the analog section of the sound card or in the soundcard mixer, perhaps the 'what you hear' mixer slider is up a tiny bit so it is recording it's own output. |

OK, thanks to all of you. You can close this thread. I am sorry. Now I see it isn't an ardour's issue. I thought it was its fault because I only use ardour to record multitrack with the LADSPA gain so high... I've tried with another percussive sound as philicordas suggested and I got also its sound on the background. There *must be* some crosstalk somewhere: at the hardware or at the mixer (even if the capture controls which are not the MIC are set to 0.0). I will continue discussing this at the LAU list when I have time. |
