DescriptionThis is totally a post 2.0 type of feature, but it just came to mind and I wanted to have it on Mantis. Right now Ardour has tracks and busses, but I was thinking it might not be a bad idea to add functionality similar to that of a VCA. Right now tracks can be routed through buses so that they can be controlled in groups. However, if the only thing that is being changed on the bus is volume and/or panning, (i.e. no pre/post plugins, inserts etc) then a VCA type of functionality might be more desirable (less load on system) since it would just be adjusting the tracks/busses assigned to it rather than actually rerouting the audio data.

The VCA concept could manipulate volume obviously and maybe panning. Panning could get messy though since you have no guarentee that all tracks/busses assigned would have the same number of channel outputs. VCAs could also be automated. Perhaps it could manipulate other controlls as well?

Just thought I'd throw this idea out and see what people think.

it appears that you don't know about mix groups. thats the problem with a lack of documentation. click on the "groups" button on the left hand side of the mixer. create a new group. then go to the group button of each track/bus and assign it to that group. make sure the group is enabled (click on the box on the left of its name). after that, all fader moves, rec-enables, solos, mutes etc. will propagate across the group.

then let us know how it works out for you.

What I'm talking about is a bit different than grouping tracks/buses together.

Say you have two tracks that have very different volume automation. However you want to fade the overall volume of these two tracks down. Right now what you would do is send the outputs of these two tracks to a bus, and automate the volume control on the bus to fade the over-all volume.

But, say you don't want the signal of these two tracks to be combined, because they are to be routed to mutually exclusive destinations. Currently you would create two separate buses that are grouped so that the signals are not combined, but you are able to control their volume in unison without disturbing the automation of the individual tracks.

So far not much of a problem. But start adding more and more tracks with a similar type of objective and you end up with a tangled mess of buses. I have some projects where I have two or three times as many buses as tracks because of scenarios like this.

I was thinking adding a functionality modeled after how VCAs work would simplify the signal routing making it more manageable and requiring less processing.

This can be disreguarded. This was way back before I discovered the wonderful feature of "local" gain as opposed to using track gain automation, which makes the feature I wanted possible with the current setup.
