Summary0006283: Tape recording mode does not work
DescriptionVersion: Ardour 4.0.71 "No Pussyfooting" (built from revision 4.0-71-g9b10890). This is the demo version from the site.

Platform: win32

Problems:

1) Tracks with tape mode are recorded to disk but no region is created in Ardour.

2) Track with recording mode other than tape cannot be reset to tape mode (despite it seeming a valid option in the context menu).

3) Tape tracks recorded to disk are never cleaned.

I can confirm 1 & 2.

but need to think about 3. I think that's intentional. Tape tracks (when working) consist of one large
endless region. Only removing the tape track should make it possible to remove the actual data.

Indeed - the media file is cleaned after deleting the track and resarting Ardour.

Also - if I may state an opinion - I think that it might be best if the tape mode was not a "record mode" but reather a "track mode" that would be set permamently during the track creation and it would result in the track recording to be permamently associated with only one media file. Maybe even the track should only be allowed to contain regions based on this single media file?

Also - the context menu for midi tracks also has "tape mode" as a valid option.

Some small progress in 4.0-170-g9a94688 basic record & playback functionality is restored.

There are lots of edge cases that came to be in the transition A3.5 to 4.0 which break tape tracks.

In their current state tape-tracks should not be exposed to end-users for released versions (but I'm glad they're in normal builds, otherwise the bugs would not be discovered).

Regarding comment 16645: The idea is that one can only switch mode if there is no region on the track or the only region present is already a tape-region (That has also been fixed now).

Still, lots of issues remain, particularly Session Start/End range related.
