Summary0006034: Control Surfaces "Stubborn" Feature : devices w/ touch should ignore moves without finger
DescriptionFor motorized faders such as Mackie Control, Ardour should:
- ignore movements made without finger touch (because accidental)
- wait 1s after the movement ends, then send to the surface the previous value as feedback to reposition the fader in a stubborn fashion :)

# Discussed on IRC on 2014-11-17:
(01:03:39 PM) FlorianBd: Hi guys :) Not a priority but a detail: control surfaces usually ignore faders movements when done without touch. So e.g if I move a fader using a plastic pen, it should come back to its original position and the mix is not affected. That allows engineers to put their documents / remote controls on the console without bothering about messing up the mix by mistake.
(01:04:41 PM) las: FlorianBd: not really correct
(01:04:56 PM) las: FlorianBd: (1) many devices with faders don't have touch
(01:05:22 PM) las: FlorianBd: (2) if the device supports touch detect, then the physical interaction you've just described should work
(01:05:43 PM) las: FlorianBd: (3) how this interacts with the DAW depends on whether it is using full write mode or touch mode or other automation moders
(01:06:32 PM) las: FlorianBd: what i *think* you might be saying is that ardour is not sending feedback that would correct a non-human-motion of a fader
(01:07:07 PM) las: FlorianBd: and we do that to reduce the amount of data we send. sending the same value over and over is stupid, and will break some controllers (not permanently)
(01:07:11 PM) FlorianBd: las: yes
(01:07:58 PM) FlorianBd: las: if we take the example of Cubase, it will wait about 1s and then put back the fader (in addition to ignoring the move)
(01:08:30 PM) las: FlorianBd: this is the sort of thing that at this point probably just needs filing away in mantis unless you plan to immediately cook up a patch
(01:08:55 PM) FlorianBd: las: that's why I said it's not a priority :)
(01:09:10 PM) las: FlorianBd: noting it here makes it less than zero priority
(01:09:37 PM) las: FlorianBd: it isn't as if mantis drives development work, but if things like this just get chatted about on IRC, they are gone basically forever
(01:10:04 PM) las: FlorianBd: in this case, filing a feature request with a sensible title and then just pasting this conversation would be fine

PS: it should probably be an option, and disabled by default, because if Ardour mistakenly thinks the surface has touch sensors, then it would never work and people would not necessary think of disabling this option.

I propose to call it "Stubborn faders upon move without touch" :)
