Summary0005803: PFL sometimes produces SIP/AFL audio
DescriptionVersion: 3.5.14, 3.5.74, 3.5.143

Steps to reproduce:

1: Open a session containing some audio in a track, and which has the monitor section enabled.
2: Do something to make the track's output obviously different from the input. (For example, I set the fader to -15 dB.) I had the metering point set to "in", but I don't think it matters.
3: In the monitor section, set SIP mode, and try solo'ing on the track - make sure it works. (It should.)
4: Save the session and exit. [Later experiments have shown that saving isn't necessary: closing/quitting is sufficient.]
5: Start ardour3, open the session again. It should come up in SIP mode (as expected), and that should still work fine.
6: Change to PFL mode, and click PFL on the channel. I hear the same output as I did with Solo (-15 dB in my example) -- hmm, I expected to hear audio from _before_ the fader.
7: Change the metering point. On the first click of the metering point button, I get pre-fader audio back -- yay! It keeps working (I think) as long as the session stays open. (Occasionally when switching the metering point I also get a burst of noise - a kind of stuttering sound that might last for a few hundred milliseconds - and Qjcakctl reports numerous x-runs.)

(I'm only now getting around to opening a bug report...)

This issue may be related to the one reported in bug ID 0005735. In that case, the reporter found that switching to AFL and back made the problem go away, so he closed the bug report. As shown above, I've found that the problem comes back when the session is re-opened.

When I first started testing Ardour 4, I didn't see this problem, so I thought it had been fixed. Now that I've used it on several sessions, I can say that the problem is still present, although it may not be 100% repeatable. That's with 4.0.0 and 4.0.312 (nightly).

I'm still seeing the issue with nightly 4.2.546.

As before, if I leave a session in PFL mode, then open it up again (so we start in PFL mode), both PFL and SIP modes seem to work as expected on tracks and busses.  However, if I leave a session in SIP mode and restart, SIP works fine, but in PFL mode, engaging PFL on a track or bus sends SIP audio to Monitor - until its metering-point button is pressed. At that point the Monitor audio switches to pre-fader and continues to work as expected long as Ardour stays up.

Thanks for checking. and yes, I had missed another one.
Ardour 4.2-585-gce30132 should be fixed for good.

I've tested 3 or 4 times with nightly 4.2.592, and I haven't been able to reproduce the problem. :) Thank you!
