Descriptionregion drag on my laptop system in lock mode with lock mode and smart edit on, region drag results in a white region that doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

This happens when clicking and dragging in the lower half of the region. A range is created that is the size of the region. This range is then what is dragged and not the region itself (as it shouldn't be, in lock mode). Should a range be created when clicking on the lower half of the region ?

this was resolved on IRC. it was caused by inadvertently using join-object-range mode for the mouse without understanding precisely what it did.
