Summary0000459: Feature request: A/B route
DescriptionWould be great to have a special A/B route where you could assign two groups of tracks as ins and whatever outs you'd want. Ok, I can do this with group mute/solo. But that feels more like A/qwertz/B than real A/B.

Do Cubase/Protools have that? I don't know. It's probably impossible, right :?

you do it by using two playlists. see the "p" button in the track controls on the left side of the canvas. just put version A of the track in one playlist, version B in the other. just flip back and forth between them. its possibly not quite like the true A/B you mean, but its very close. i haven't tried doing it in real time, but i will.

please let me know what you think.

I've been thinking and trying a bit more.

In the very simple and not very useful case of A/B'ing two single tracks the playlist trick works flawlessly. Big problem: Mixer strip/plugins etc. are not taken into account. What I get to hear is the raw recording.

Then I thought of busses and exclusive solo. I set up two busses with one ardour:trackout each. Well, playing them with exclusive solo gives me exclusive solo of nothing of course. mmffff.

Anyway: Real world application of A/B'ing includes comparing two sets of tracks with complete channel settings, two sets of channel settings, live inputs to recorded stuff, while listening/not listening to the rest of the mix etc. People who actually make a living out of recording will probably come up with a lot more applications. Some of them would be possible only with ardour's routing flexibility I guess. Stuff you couldn't do on a mixing desk.

I wasn't aware of the exclusive-solo shortcut =8O) so for the time being I am happy with group-exclusive-solo. That can involve copying tracks and mixer settings around, but hey ... the B is just one click away.

Still: A/B is a very powerful tool. But then there is no reason not to have A/B/C/D/..., right? Suggestions:

* A track/mixer strip with [A..Z] exclusive buttons. An "active" button. An exclusive-solo button (A/B with/without the rest of the mix). Hitting one of [A..Z] group-mutes all other input sets in this route and in the mix. I'm not sure that this is the right way ...
* The track view of that special route represents the current audio ([A..Z] or nothing. With/without transport) Not editable 8)
* The only difference in the routes editor: Instead of calling the various sets of inputs [1..n] they would be called [A..Z]. Oh: Mixer groups show up as possible inputs.
* Related and internal: current mixer strip setting (automation, plugins, inserts, fader, sends, panning) is 1 out of a list of many, dropdown list for this, per track/per group. Snapshots should provide this I presume. But I never got one snapshot to work or restore something. So I'm not even sure what a snapshot is supposed to do. Anyway: To have more than one setting per strip would be great. And is necessary for A/B'ing mixes.

Most of these suggestions are just user interfacing to what the audio engine would have to provide. I see the problem: This A/B route would be somewhat special in as how it gets hold of the audio it wants. I may be out in the desert but somehow I think this wouldn't even be an audio route but a route that talks to the mixer and says "now mute this and that and solo this and that". Of course I don't know at all how this special route would fit in. But I have a hunch that if it doesn't fit in easily then there is work left to do flexibilitywise (that is not even a word, is it?).

ps: All this is around 09beta12

I think this might be easy to do with set_state(). Still post-1.0 though.

To A/B, I would use playlists and separate track(s) for the audio. Then use non-latching solo and mixer groups so I could solo each group at a time, all with a single click. Does this sound A/B enough?

Going to resolve this out as it is accomplished in no small part by playlists as mentioned above, and the OP seems to ahve found a solution they were happy with even many years back. Post back up if this is sitll an issue.
