Summary0000444: Select region in region editor from a list
DescriptionIn the current Ardour session I´m working on, I`ve got 4 regions in one track. 2 of the regions are on top of each other, therefore it´s pretty messy. I can only tell where the first one starts and the last one one ends, besides that, it´s all pretty confusing.
Additional InformationMy idea is to add a( combobox?, I think that´s the name for it) in the region editor to allow the user to select any of the available regions in one track from a list. This way, when you select one region from that list, all the originally data showned (layer position, time, crossfades, etc.) should be refreshed to show the data of the selected region.
It would be nice to make the region editor accesible from a button next to the E(history), R(Record),etc buttons in the track menu on the left.
A very important and usefull feature would be to add an option to HIDE REGIONS to make everything easier to see.
This option should be available when pressing the reight mouse button on a region and as a button in the region editor.

i firmly believe that "hide regions" would cause endless confusion on the part of
a user.

why are your regions on top of one another? why is it confusing? if you put them on top of each other, why are you confused? i mean these as serious questions, not just rhetoric. i'd be interested in your answers.

The regions are on top of one another because I recorded the 4 regions in the same track. I´ll explain some more:
On the first audio track (synth), I recorded some sounds I made with the Synthesizer ZynAddSubSynth. In this track there´s only one region, so there´s no problem with that.
On a second audio track (Heavy Guitar) I recorded my guitar with heavy distortion. I recorded this track while I played back the synth track. I wasn´t sure about my first recording of the guitar but I didn´t wanted to delete it. So I made 3 more recordings in the guitar track. This way I ended up with 4 versions to use with the synth track. Haven´t you ever had more than one option for a part of a song? Haven´t you ever recorded a lot og great material and you´re not sure of what should stay and what should be removed?
That´s pretty much what happened to me with this session.
I will upload a screenshot of the session soon enough so you can understand what I mean.
Why is it confusing to have four regions on top of each other?
Well, my friend, simple, let´s pretend the four regions have the exact length.
You only see one region. The only one you will be able to (for example) drag will be the one on top. If I start draging regions out of the way so that I can reach a specific region, I´ll end up with almost all of them in the wrong place.I can lower regions to lower layers but this takes too long.

The reason I had done this post whas to add a fast access to the region editor from the track buttons(Mute,History, etc) and to be able to select the region whos values I wanted to edit from the region editor from a table. That´s all.
Please, if this doesn´t seem usefull for Ardour or to you guys, that´s fine with me.But could you please tell me how to add a combobox to the region editor so that I can do it myself? Also, how do I get the names of the regions to fill a list with them?I proposed this as a feature because I don´t know how to do it myself (and beacause I thought it would be usefull to everybody). Hope I haven´t bored you too much.

we need to document the use of playlists. if you understood them - its not your fault that you don't, but they are absolutely central to the operation of a DAW - you would not have done things in this way at all.

try clicking on the "p" button in the track controls. then ask some questions on IRC :)
