Summary0000442: bored plugins
DescriptionYes folks it's true. Plugins can get bored. And if they do, they'll eat your cpu, swallow it whole and kick you out of JACK ;-)
This happens with some plugins when they run without getting input. I found a couple of plugins that are affected, but I'll give only one example. I propose to fix that in Ardour since all affected plugins can be mended there in one go.

Reproduce bug:
Start Ardour
New Session
Pre-Fader Plugin to the initial master track
Choose granular scatter processor
Edit plugin parameters:
Set last parameter (Grain Attack) to 1.01 or 4 (other values will likely work)
Hit the bypass button to activate the plugin
Watch CPU usage slowly rise until it hits 100% and JACK kicks you out
You can retain your CPU cycles by bypassing the plugin again
This poses no problem while the plugin gets input (its track is playing)

Proposed fix:
When a track is not playing (i.e. when nothing is playing, the track is mutted or (an)other track(s) soloed), all its plugins should be turned of, bypassed whatever.

This bug report may be related to the following bugs (I think I had plugins behaving as described there):
0000337
0000129

ardour 0.9beta11.2, official release compiled from source
jack 0.94.0 official release compiled from source with capabilities enabled

distribution Debian Sarge up to date as of today

do you have the option "Stop plugins with transport" enabled or disabled? (In the "Misc" tab of the options window)

sorry its taken a while to get to this, but we consider it mostly the responsibility of the plugins. the fix you proposed won't work for echoes/delays/reverbs etc.

i have just tried to reproduce this bug with current CVS, though 0.9beta18.4 would be equivalent. i cannot do it.

also, in your descriptions, its not clear if you ever had any input to the track (its actually a bus) set up.

i also note that i can't get any output from this plugin at all, with any parameters i've tried.

as per related bugs 442 and 129, this is believed fixed.
