| Summary | 0004354: "Initial choice" page in ArdourStartup assistant is awkward | ||||
| Description | I like the new assistant interface when starting up Ardour 3, really nice stuff! The dialog to ask the first question (not on the first run), whether to create a new or open an existing session, is not very efficient IMO. Looking at a typical project workflow, I think the default choice should be to _open_ a session. A session created once will probably be opened many times later. Second, I think the workflow would be better with only one click instead of a radio button in the top left and a Forward button in the lower right corner. There could be two _buttons_ "Create a new session" and "Open an existing session" which don't need to be comfirmed with the "Forward" action. If the user accidently hits the wrong one, there's still a "Back" action. I'm sure you have seen this style in e.g. installers offering Remove - Repair - Select features. I hope this will trigger some creative feedback! | ||||

You could also present a single window containing three things: (1) a button to create new session, (2) a list of recent sessions (3) a browse button. That saves one step when you open a recent session, which I guess is the most common use case. This window could be the same during the first run of Ardour as for subsequent runs (or possibly hide the recent list if it's empty). |

you can double-click on any of the radio options to get the same effect as "click-then-click-on-forward". |

i tried jolson's idea, and it proved quite unsatisfactory for a number of subtle (and unexpected) reasons. after making lots of changes, i ended up backing them all out. the fact that the dbl-click "shortcut" exists is reason enough for me to close this bug for now, nut in addition svn rev 12355 now contains the change to do the same on single click. |
