Summary0003983: A selected note shouldn't get eaten by unselected ones when moved onto them
DescriptionThis results in note loss. Maybe a solution to this would be to make unselected and static notes push the selected and moved notes so that they wont fight for existence.
When moving a range of selected notes for example, the conflicting notes should not result in the death of moving ones. Instead they should be held on the border of standing notes. When moving back however (ie. moving notes up then back down) ardour's midi editor should remember the held notes' original stance related to other notes in the region. Do any of the options in

Session -> Properties -> Misc -> MIDI Note Overlaps

make Ardour do what you expect? "don't do anything in particular" perhaps?

Yes it prevents note loss thanks for pointing to it. I think it should be default, because losing notes while dragging regions is what musicians won't like. Also I suggest considering my "push the overlapping notes by existing ones" option too, it could be very useful. And I don't know if there are any but assigning good keybindings to these functions can save a great deal of time while in a workflow. Also in what mode the user is editing should be indicated on the track header.

The overlap was changed to "don't do anything" about a month ago. I'm going to mark this as resolved now.

Keybindings for moving notes around are documented at http://ardour.org/a3_features_midi_editing
