Summary0003372: make a build bot on Launchpad so people can use development builds of Ardour 3
Descriptionthe summary pretty much says it all. if there was a nightly or periodic build PPA on LP built from Ardour 3 svn. I would love to use it! (I'm sure others would as well who don't want to compile 3 from source)

I'm not an Ardour developer and I'm sure they will be grateful for you offering sponsorship and to test A3 but I have spent a lot of time in the #ardour irc channel and I know Paul (the lead developer) is averse to building and distributing binaries and packages of the alpha/beta Ardour.

The main reason behind this, I think, is the belief that those who don't know how to or can't be bothered to build A3 from svn are much less likely to file bug reports, give backtraces or contribute patches etc. Secondly, Ardour only has a few regular developers other than Paul and they've got their hands full with all the bugs that oofus, myself and the other current testers are providing/ have provided already so theres no real need for any more testers just yet.

Paul may disagree and the beta should be here 'real soon now' anyway so its not all doom and gloom.

I just thought I'd throw the idea out there. It has worked for many other projects to get people to file bug reports more quickly if they have periodic 'official' builds from the project itself versus having to build it on their own. Example: more time using the builds and less time messing with the source and compiling it themselves - dealing with compiler issues/warnings, etc.

I can build from source (sometimes) and build my own deb's... the problem is I do not know how to automate this process ending with a PPA. Hence, my sponsorship of the idea. Monetary kudos for the full fledged implementation requires an actual Launchpad PPA as an end result.

Look at this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~falk-t-j/+archive/lucid-latest/

It provides updates to Ardour 3.0 SVN quite often.

Amazing... that's just what I need! I knew when I checked Launchpad earlier this year, there were none. Guess this PPA for ardour3 was recently setup. Kudos for finding this. Guess since this person externally solved the problem, I wouldn't have to pay the reward unless he came forward here to claim it.
