Summary0002714: Full song timeline
DescriptionMy proposition:

Timeline on top of all tracks with view of full song. This wold be very usefull when I working on small piece of track on big zoom. This timeline helps on jumping on song without changing zoom.

Timeline will be displayed independly regardless of vertical scroll.

This is kind-of implemented in 3.0 SVN. Comments welcome.

Nice addition. Some comments.

Not sure if it is this new view, but all tracks are now out of alignment with their headers.

Would be nice if it indicated vertical zoom as well, ie how many tracks are visible in the editor.

Would also be good if the editor view was represented by a rectangle over the overview view, and that rectangle was draggable with the editor view following.

And you probably know that the playhead disappears behind the overview !

The alignment problem should now be fixed, and the view is now represented by a draggable rectangle.

Brilliant !

More comments/requests.

Could the rectangle be filled with a translucent colour, maybe a lighter green ?

Could the lines that represent the regions follow the colours of the regions ?

I think a 'show overview' option is needed in the view menu.

These points now implemented in 3.0 SVN.

can't seem to find the 'show overview' (or equivalent) option. Mis-commit ?

wow, all that colour ! too much colour maybe with coloured regions and a coloured rectangle ?

Could the rectangle be outlined with a darker colour (same colour or different colour) ?

If you are building using waf you may need to do a

scons gtk2_ardour/ardour.menus

to get the new menus file built correctly.

I'm thinking perhaps the rectangle should be translucent white; any other colour doesn't really make a lot of sense, perhaps. I'll outline it.

Nice work indeed. Is it possible to make the rectangle expandable like a region. This way expanding or shrinking the rectangle changes the editor zoom level and track height.

Yes, I was wondering about that. Just need to work out how the GUI should look: handles on the rectangle to change its size? Or some combination of Shift/Ctrl drag... Any thoughts?

yep, scons rebuilt the menus thanks. hide option works fine.

Yeah, white should work.

As for zooming, handles on each of the four edges which when dragged zoom in that direction (re-stating what you said I think).

or keep it simple and change the cursor like it would on a window bondary. Clicking here whould expand rather than move.

For a starting point I've implemented PrimaryModifier-drag to allow resizing of the view rectangle horizontally. I'm not quite clear on what vertical resizing should do: probably resize track heights in the editor...

I think that's all it can do isn't it (resize track heights). It would act like you have selected all track headers and are dragging the height of one of them (therefore all track heights changing)

Another suggestion : MouseWheel to move the rectangle up and down, PrimaryModifier+MouseWheel to move it left and right.

Does it need a playhead in there, so you know exactly where you are ?

Playhead is now in there.
