| Summary | 0001713: Panning Gets Borked After Screwing with Busses | ||||
| Description | Hey folks So I had 2 tracks, mono to mono, both inputting into a mono to stereo bus. I added the plate reverb plugin to the prefader list, then later on added an input to the bus to make it stereo to stereo, and outputs to the tracks to make them mono to stereo. At that point the routing went 'all crazy' and I wasn't able to pan the tracks. Whenever i panned to the right, they went silent. The fix was to remove all the plugins and change to a 2>2 reverb. Here's a chat log from #irc with nostar who helped me figure this out, I'm not even sure I understand what's going on here, but there you have it. Ardour rules! bennyp: so here's my q: if I have two mono tracks outputting to a bus, and the bus has stereo output, can I pan the tracks individually? could I have panned them individually anyways without the bus? [5:02pm] nostar: bennyp yes and yes [5:02pm] nostar: bennyp even though they were mono inputs they were still stereo output [5:03pm] bennyp: nostar: how? maarten suggested that i couldn't http://ardour.org/node/916#comment-3444 [5:03pm] • gregj reads, and cries. I wish I had time to hack ardour [5:03pm] nostar: bennyp at the bottom of the mono track should be a panner, just move it back n forth and watch the signal change [5:04pm] nostar: bennyp this is assuming the tracks do have 2 output ports connected to a stereo master bus of course, which is the norm [5:05pm] nostar: bennyp thats identified by having 2 gain meters in the track and the presence of a panner [5:05pm] bennyp: nostar: ok gotcha (i'm catchin gup at least [5:05pm] nostar: bennyp experiment with this by adding inputs and outputs to a track and watch the gain meters change and addition of panners [5:06pm] bennyp: so I've set it up so that the mono tracks output stereo to the stereo bus, but when i pan either of the tracks to the right, it goes silent [5:06pm] nostar: add additional input and output ports that is, not just making additional connections to existing ports [5:07pm] lymeca left the chat room. (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)) [5:08pm] nostar: the stereo master bus? [5:08pm] bennyp: nostar: correct [5:09pm] bennyp: well it's just a regular bus [5:09pm] bennyp: it's not the master [5:10pm] nostar: bennyp it sounds like u incorectly connected the tracks outputs to the bus's inputs [5:10pm] bennyp: i connected out1 from both tracks to in 1 of the bus, and out 2 of both tracks to in2 of the bus [5:10pm] nostar: bennyp try reverting back to the default out 1+2 to reconnect the track to the master bus and try panning [5:10pm] bennyp: so the bus has four signals coming in [5:11pm] nostar: bennyp that sounds correct [5:11pm] kampfschlaefer left the chat room. ("Konversation terminated!") [5:11pm] bennyp: nostar: yeah I can pan properly now [5:11pm] bennyp: maybe that's what maarten was talking about [5:11pm] Don1 joined the chat room. [5:11pm] bennyp: perhaps the panning information isn't passed along to the bus or something [5:12pm] sampo_v2 left the chat room. ("Ex-Chat") [5:12pm] DonF left the chat room. [5:12pm] nostar: bennyp nah somethings goofed it should work the same thru a stereo bus [5:13pm] nostar: bennyp p.s. i meant master out btw [5:13pm] bennyp: nostar odddddd, because I just reconnected to the bus and as soon as i pan right, it's dead silent [5:13pm] nostar: bennyp are the panners on the bus in the correct position? [5:14pm] bennyp: nostar: when I disconnected the original track's outputs, then selected "out 1+2" from the output menu, I got panning [5:14pm] nostar: bennyp the top one should be full left, the bottom full right [5:14pm] bennyp: nostar: panners on the bus are at that position [5:14pm] nostar: bennyp try 'Master Out' [5:15pm] bennyp: nostar: ok I set the bus' meter to input, right? and I then panned both tracks to the right [5:15pm] bennyp: I don't hear either track, but the right meter on the bus is jumping [5:16pm] nostar: bennyp no keep it on post [5:16pm] bennyp: nostar: Master Out also gives me panning [5:16pm] ZanQdo joined the chat room. [5:17pm] bennyp: nostar: when I switch to post, the meter dies [5:17pm] bennyp: so I think maybe it's in the plugins [5:17pm] nostar: bennyp ahh plugins? deactivate them all [5:18pm] nostar: better yet remove them all for now just get the bus working right then work on plugins one at a time [5:19pm] bennyp: ok plugins are out now it's panning [5:19pm] bennyp: they're all mono plugins i think [5:20pm] nostar: adding a mono plugin to a stereo bus/track is supposed to be ok, the route is duplicated [5:20pm] bennyp: nostar: ok my plugins are plate reverb, barry's satan maximizer and tap tremolo [5:21pm] nostar: try each one by itself [5:21pm] bennyp: ok bsm checks [5:21pm] Don1 is now known as DonF_. [5:22pm] bennyp: man i need more comfortable headphones [5:22pm] bennyp: I got a warning from plate reverb [5:22pm] bennyp: that must be it [5:22pm] Bonkers-: I love my new AKG 401s [5:22pm] DonF_ is now known as Don1. [5:23pm] Don1 is now known as DonF_. [5:24pm] nostar: bennyp yes thats it, a 1->2 plugin doesnt make sense at a stereo point, u can either use a 1->1 or 2->2 but not a 1->2 [5:25pm] nostar: 2->2 is obvious, 1->1 duplicates the path, but theres no way to handle a 1->2 [5:25pm] DonF_ left the chat room. [5:25pm] bennyp: whoa!!! TAP Reverberator's warble chamber setting was like dialing up the snazzy shuffle [5:25pm] bennyp: sweet! [5:25pm] lymeca joined the chat room. [5:25pm] bennyp: thanks nostar! [5:25pm] DonF joined the chat room. [5:26pm] nostar: i wonder if theres a bug here though, did it allow u to insert the 1->2 after a 1->1 on a stereo bus/track? thats sneaky [5:26pm] bennyp: I think what went down was the track was mono, then I added the plugin, then switched to stereo [5:27pm] nostar: no it still refuses here [5:28pm] bennyp: odd odd odd [5:28pm] bennyp: well I'd be happy to offer up my session file for closer scrutiny [5:30pm] nostar: sure enough theres a problem there, if u add an input port to a track/bus after the 1->2 plugin is inserted, yer left with this messed up routing [5:30pm] nostar: bennyp no need for a session file there, its easy to replicate now [5:31pm] bennyp: nostar: that would have been it [5:31pm] bennyp: nice detective work! [5:31pm] bennyp: wow i helped find a bug! [5:31pm] nostar: bennyp you should enter it in mantis [5:32pm] swh joined the chat room. [5:32pm] bennyp: ok | ||||
| Additional Information | Mac 10.4.9, latest jack, ardour 2.0.2, a bunch of crazy random half-built foss programs slowly rotting in various corners of the filesystem. I also had an omellete for breakfast, it was delicious with hot sauce. | ||||

Is this still a problem? If so, could you clarify the precise list of steps necessary to trigger the bug? |
