| Summary | 0001373: beta 8: Speed of Visualization and processing, especially normalize | ||||
| Description | In comparison to other audio programms, Ardour runs very slow in some circumstances on my computer. Sometimes the image freezes, and scrolling down needs a lot of time (while playing for example), once I even got a dropout, while recording 20 channels of audio to an external firewiredisk (In a setup, which with Nuendo was testet to record 48 tracks without any problems with much lower buffer settings), while now other work was done on the computer. Especially normalize seems to work rather slow. And I miss a "virtual" option like the one in samplitude, that only changes the regions (object) gain setting without the need to rewrite the whole files and therefor is very fast. | ||||
| Additional Information | MacBook Mac OS X 10.4 Intel Core Duo 2 GHz, 2 GB Ram Recording on external Firewire Drive Fireface 800 Soundcard Jack 101.3 | ||||

normalize is "virtual" as you describe. are you using plugins? plugins are responsible for 96.7823% of all slowdowns seen in ardour. |

No, I didn´t came to the point of using plugins yet. I´m just trying the basic features at the moment. I recorded a concert with 20 tracks ( I couldn´t record all tracks I had, because of the limit I reported in another thread). 48k 32 bit aprox 2 hours recording time. All I did yet, is setting some volume and pan settings. And I tryed to add / remove audio. Nothing more. |

Could you give some relative times you would expect to see for say, normalizing an hour long region? As mentioned above, normalize is completely notdestructive in Ardour, so there should be no need for a virtualize checkbox, however it still has to analyze the entire file in order to perform the action effectively, but it might be handy to have some benchmark comparisons.
