| Description | First let me start off by saying I am extremely intrigued by this DAW for GNU/Linux platforms. I can't wait to try it out. I do have a few questions and suggestions...I understand the desire to stick with the open-source format and I looked at your outline for future releases and the features that will be added with them but I do not see any plans to integrate vst, rtas, or any other plugin architecture into this application. Is there a reason behind this? Compatibility issues, licenses, etc? This would be most appealing to someone like me being familour with these plug-ins and having the archive of them that I do. I feel that a lot of people would be detoured because they can't use their favorite toys inside your powerful tool. And when you plan on doing the following in the future, "read-access to development code will be limited to core beta testers and by paid license." it seams only fair that these type of 'paid for' plug-ins should be supported in the future. My other question is, are there any plans to bring this over to the windows platform? Why or why not? I was also thinking that you might want to look into creating a Linux distro which has Ardour with all necissary packages included, LADSPA with all necissary packages included, and all available LADSPA plugins, plus anything else that would be useful to have a completely working enviroment for this DAW. Like including linux drivers for higher end audio interfaces (like the e-mu 1820m....the one I have...hehehe..). I know none of this is easy or else I would check out the source and do it myself but they are suggestions that I feel might get a broader audience looking at Linux as an audio work-station to be reckoned with in the future. None of us have the time to create our own audio distribution, but I suggest you look at PlanetCCRMA which installs on top of Fedora. Actually, we do support VST plugins. It's been broken by recent versions of Wine though. We have a newer way of supporting VST plugins, but no one has been able to implement it yet. VST is supported by a VST->Ladspa bridge on MacOSX and there are plans to support Apple's AudioUnit plugin format as well. |

for a pre-packaged Linux/audio live CD, see also Studio To Go, from Fervent Software. as for windows, none of the core developers has any interest in messing around with what, according to insiders at several other DAW companies, is the single largest problems with DAWs on windows: windows itself. however, there are some ruminations about a possible windows port that may be commercially funded. VST support should be back within the next 24-48 hours, I hope. Meanwhile, its possible to run most VST's standalone as JACK clients, which for VSTi's is generally preferable anyway. |
