| Description | Having the possibility to record in 32bit-float is very useful and shows a high quality. But it also needs the double amount of space on your hd. This is not the worst problem. You lose the ability to play nearly two times more tracks (in reference to 16bit). | ||||
| Additional Information | I´m writing my diploma on the university of ilmenau/germany (media science) about the possibility of using ardour+jack in an educational environment (for students, that will edit & mix features for radio or other media). Maybe someone knows this university by Prof. Brandenburger from the Fraunhofer-Institute (The "father" of MP3 - and now he has a new child: "wave field synthesis"). So I make some comparing performance- and usability-tests with ProToolsLE/ the ported versions of Ardour and JACK on an G5-MacOSx with RME-HDSP9652/ Ardour and JACK with RME-HDSP9652 on DeMuDi1.2.6multim.686 and P4-3,4GHz. In the tests I primary use a firewire-hd for audio, because the students mostly do that to. At 48KHz/32bit i can play nearly 60tracks - native - without SCSI or RAID. This is good. But when I just want to edit something without a lot of PlugIns or something to be computed, then I dont´t need 32bit - and I could need some tracks more. So this 32bit-option is a very nice feature and professional too. But I think it is a mistake to "kill the power of the user". The software should not steal you the ability to decide what you want. When I just need 16 oder 24 I WANT 16 or 24 - and not more. When I will do a lot of computations with plugins or a lot of mixing, then I need it and I will thank god (and of course the brilliant coders) for this. :O) | ||||

Of course you can use "embedded audio" as reference to extern audio-files in different bit-depths, but I think you should also have the possibility to choose in recording. (in this case I have a question: Why there is written "link to external audio", when ardour still copies the files in the "/sounds"-directory? A Link is a link is a link - is it not? |

Perhaps a better idea (one that could be immediately implemented) would be using 2 or more firewire harddrives at a time with Software RAID. |

you´re right. But I thought of ProTools (native like LE) an other Applications like NUENDO that give you the possibility to choose, even when they compute plugins (and some plugin developers say that they build plugins with a 64-bit range for endless-headroom-computing - like waves). But it will not kill me :O). RAID is a good idea - harware-based or software-based. When JACK always runs with a 32-bit reference this is perhaps the best way. |

ardour2 supports 24 bit native recording as well as 32. post-2.0, we will add 16 bit as well (its very easy to do, mostly some GUI futzing). btw: the entire premise of this report is wrong. track bit depths do not affect CPU utilization, they affect disk bandwidth utilization. changing the native bit depth does not free up more CPU for plugins etc. as for the link question, a hard link is made when embedding audio if and only if the file resides on the same filesystem as the session. this way, you can remove the original file without affecting the session. if the file is on a different filesystem, no such link will be made, and ardour will use the path as specified when embedding. |
