Summary0001018: wants more plugins
DescriptionIf an audio program is going to be successful it needs to do a few things. First, it has to work, all the time. looks like you guys are getting somewhere.
after it works it has to sound good. Aside from good music, plugins make things sound good. What you need more than anything is VST & VSTi support, Hell, be the first program to combine that with DirectX, AudioUnits, TDM and RTAS and you will win everyone over. The quality of the plugins are starting to determine the quality of the recording so being able to run all of them is very important. And if you could do some sort of sampler thing too... that would hook up to an akai 4x4 pad you would really be on to something. Oh, and tap tempo song re-clocking to adjust metronome to the tempo of a live recording via midi that would be sweet or just a tempo interperator.... ummm I would also like a built in RTA / Scope and the ability to bring up more than one plugin screen at a time. And at the heart of things you need the ability to save all your takes on the same track, be able to label them, and then be able to choose which one you want to bring to the foreground. like cycle mode but not taking up all that deskspace. Basicly all you need to do is get as many plugins up and running as possible, take the editing ability's of ProTools and the Midi ability's of Logic Pro and make in run on linux so I can say goodbye to MS.
Oh, and it needs to be able to import/export OMF files or just open the session files from PT, Logic, Cubase, Sonar, Vegas, Reason, Acid, Nuendo, and every other multitrack software.

you seem somewhat unaware of the basic difficulties running software (ie. plugins) written for one operating system (e.g. windows) on another (e.g. linux). basically, its impossible. fortunately, we specialize in making the impossible into the merely rather difficult.

we have done some work on VST support; it works with a specific version of Wine (a windows emulator), with a reasonable subset of VST plugins but no copy-protected ones, especially not ones that use iLok which doesn't exist on linux.

you cannot run TDM plugins without protools hardware.

ardour already allows you to use any number of plugins and bring up any number of plugin editors.

OMF import/export is impossible because its a proprietary format. we plan to support (at least) AAF and probably AES-31. the BBC is interested in adding AAF support for us.

as for multiple takes, we don't do loop/cycle record yet, but we do have a fairly sophisticated model for playlist usage. playlists can be selected for any track, shared by multiple tracks etc. we plan to improve the UI for multiple takes, probably along the lines of SX's "expanded track" view.

"sampler thing hookup" is done via JACK, not internally within ardour (though you can run Kontakt as a VST plugin within ardour this way; its a silly way to do it, however). you should probably become more familiar with JACK and the general idea of different programs sharing audio with each other, as opposed to everything be done with plugins.

btw, there is already a bug report in mantis titled "like, totally rock".

Ardour2 now supports VSTs (to an extent).
