Summary0009983: grab selection is not precise.
Descriptiontrying to precisely grab stuff in ardour is not easy. after making a few songs with it, its always something that annoys me. after some testing i still don't understand whats going on. i think there is an issue with the box selection and the mouse being used differently under the hood. for instance. sometimes the rectangle will look as if its snapping on the line, but in reality, its using the mouse position, so it selects further to the right. however, even sometimes it still selects random elements on the left side. imho the only things selected should be within the grey selection area. again, basic stuff like this should work how one would expect. if its not in the gray area, it should not get selected.
Steps To Reproducethis one is easy to reproduce, just selection a section of a song ( preferably one with plenty of tracks and samples ) and if you notice , on the right of the box , you can end up in a situation where the mouse is past the gray box, but it looks like the boxed has snapped to a line. however its random for what gets selected on the left side.

Well, most other uses also want grouped items to be selected along. That was a popular feature request.

Usually clips that were recorded at the same time (explicit group), also available via [context] Menu > Region(s) > Group/Ungroup selected..
Or implicit grouping (Preferences >Editor > Regions in edit groups are edited together).

Does that explain what you are experiencing? If so.. perhaps a "never group regions" feature is needed?

what I'm experiencing is seemingly random stuff getting selected from the left or right side of my selection box. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with grouped items because it doesn't always do it. like in the pictures. also, i dont really use that grouping feature ( as far as im aware ).

so after some testing, i highlighted my entire song and selected un-grouping. and that seems to have fixed it. selections seem to behave the way i would expect. ( so far ) not sure when i grouped anything, so i find that feature odd at best. ( not to mention the hours wasted looking for a solution on google ) , searching things like "why is ardour selecting things I didnt highlight?" doesnt help at all
