Summary | 0006757: support 'canMono' for VSTs that flag it
Description | You may consider this a 'feature request'... VST provides 'canMono' function for a stereo plugin used in a mono channel. Please support it, rather than wrecking a mono channel signal chain by converting it to stereo. Even with LV2 or LADSPA it would make more sense to simply use one port of a stereo plugin, or sum it back to mono after stereo processing. Mono channels exist for a reason. If you want a stereo channel you can make a stereo channel. You can even present a mono source to both input ports of a stereo channel. Ardour makes it easy to do this. Ardour also makes it easy to add / remove audio ports. But it is not possible to remove audio ports from the pre-panner signal chain where this conversion takes place, and impacts every other plugin in the chain.

Can't edit posts on here, but lets forget the hypothetical. Any requirement for stereo processing is sent to a stereo fx bus anyway. So forget that bit about summing back to mono. Again, there is no case for breaking a mono channel by converting to stereo when stereo plugins can be used in mono without breaking the channel. |
