Summary0006271: Ideas for automation improvment
Description1. When no automation is set, opening the automation track could show an automation line, representing the currently set value.

2. Ctrl-clicking (or Shif or Right or whatever) could place a point on on the line, but only use value from x-axis of pointer. So by Ctrl-clicking you don't alter any value, it just makes a dot on the automation line.

No point on the automation line would mean there's no automation.

Example:
Say I want to raise a guitar track by 3dB in the chorus in a song.

Open the fader automation track. There is a automation line that represents the currently set fader level. If one alters the fader, the automation line follows accordingly. Then Ctrl-click (inside the automation track) where the chorus starts (this makes a point on the line, doesn't change value) and also where the chorus ends. Now drag the automation line and increase it by 3db.

Imo if automation could be done this way it would be much faster (and easier maybe)

Well it's a bad explanation so if you don't understand what I mean please tell me an I'll try to reprase.

I just tested in Ardour 4.4.381, and you can "alt-shift" click on a line to add a new point exacty on the existing line.

I think you can close that issue.

I don't have a session open right now to try it, but has the other part of ma120mk11's idea been addressed -- ie, that no automation points present (the initial state) means there's no automation, and the line moves with the fader? One of the work-flow issues I have is that my first click in Draw mode is basically a shot in the dark level-wise, so the line that's created with those first two points almost always has to be moved. This idea seems as though it could help with that.
