Summary0005905: Feature Request - Gain On Mixer Strip
DescriptionI think that gain control should be availible on the mixer for every Input channel. I know mix bus has this (along with many other things like eqs and compressions ) but gain control is the first and most important stage of setting up a project for recording.

personaly, i think the gain control should be at the top of the channel. its a pre fader, pre everything control to balance out the levels of your channels. Essentially get everything to a starting point. To roughly the same level so that the faders can be used to mix.

Now i know that you could simply insert a plugin in the track, but thats extra work that could be saved by having it already in place. and i know you can use gain on the tracks directly. But its still a comen feature that is handy to have right there on the mixer, and i dont think this would increase the DSP load too much. Computers are so powerfull these days that this shouldnt matter, and maybe if it does for those with less powerfull machines maybe it could be turned off.

But what about the faders, thats gain right? Well yes kind off. But what are faders for? Faders are for mixing output levels. But what use are they if your input levels are all different. You end up with less effective travel on faders that have "hot" signals and not enough travel on faders with "cold signals"

Also if your channels are not balanced input level wise, each fader doesnt react the same to changes in fader. It makes things easier when you can quickly an easily alter the gain without having to go back to the editor and do gain automation. but instead just go to gain on the mixer and make a quick adjustment then go back to mixing with faders..

This is all part of Gain Structure. Im very much a Gain type engineer these days. Faders all over the shop is frustrating. Faders all in a line = happy .

I wont go into details of gain structure, as some of it delvs into the anologue relm which doesnt apply to digital.

Anyway, it would be handy to have.
