Summary0005186: Feature request about drum editing mode
DescriptionI know it has been suggested earlier in one form or another, but could you add a feature to Ardour3 where in the drum editing mode you could right click a key on the piano roll and assign a short two or three letters name to the key just like you assign a name to a track - for example - K.D. for kick drum, Sn.-snare, Cy-cymbal etc.? That way would be much easier to compose a drum track, when one could easily see the drum instruments, instead of clicking on the keys all the time or trying to remember all the sound placements on the piano roll. I've seen this feature in Reaper, and it doesn't look bad at all.

Unlike Reaper, we have chosen not to create our own file format for this information. This has pros and cons.

If there is a MIDNAM file for the external instrument or plugin, you will already see note names/drum names (see screenshot). MIDNAM is a standard file format defined by the MIDI Manufacturers Association.

However, the downside is that this format is extremely complex, and Ardour does not provide a way to edit what is (or is not) displayed. Creating MIDNAMs is not a simple process (though it can be done in any text editor.
