i don't understand the workflow that you used that led to this. can you be a lot more specific about what you did.

When launching Ardour, sometimes (usually after changing interface or connecting / disconnecting one) on the Audio / Midi setup window the interface box will be empty.
Then, if by mistake, one forgets to choose one, he will get the window pictured above, which is cool.
But then, when you hit the "OK", instead of going back to A/M setup, Ardour will hang.
