Summary0003153: Newly recorded regions should never use 'long' crossfades
Descriptionwhen you are recording an overdub and it overlaps the beginning or ending of an existing region, after the recording you will get a long crossfade across the overlap.

Long crossfades should only happen when you "drag" two regions to overlap.

One solution is to turn off "automatic long crossfades" options while you are recording, but this is an inconvenience.

i think the key here is "when you are recording an overdub". its not trivial to identify whether or not the purpose of a capture pass is a literal overdub or the kind of "layering" that is happening at present. i would agree, though, that the default should probably be to assume that its an overdub and that the xfade behaviour for an overdub should be as you described.
