Summary0001561: Support Ogg/MP3 as sources
DescriptionThis is a simple feature to describe. I'd like ardor to be able to import and embedded sound files in Ogg Vorbis adn MP3 formats/codecs.
Additional InformationFor many it may be useless, but I have a case where it is extremely useful. A kind of karaoke database of hundreds of songs that my wife uses to teach to sign. They are in Ogg and sometimes in MP3 because the quality is not really important, but being able to store them in 80GB (the hard disk is). Using a non-compressed format like WAV would require close to a therabyte and that's make no sense.
If you need any more clarifications, don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you.

As a new member to this forum and neophyte audio editor I'm going to reiterate the need that I have and have seen that others have for Ardour to import and maybe eventually export MP3s. I have seen two objections referenced: Licensing and Quality.

Both are important. Since I do not understand the licensing issue I cannot comment. Regarding quality I believe that a disclaimer on the import and export screens will sufficiently warn users of the risks associated with beginning or ending with substandard sound file formats.

Ogg/Vorbis is already supported if Ardour is built and used with a version of libsndfile that has this support built in. The same is also true of FLAC, which is a lossless compression format.

MP3 support is not going to happen in the near future, although there is a way to implement it that would be in compliance with the MP3 licensing/patent situation.

think it's useful to be able to import files and convert them to mp3 waw during this process, saves time, space and velocizzia work, even if there is a discussion of forty responses in other sections of my site's position, and many others, does not change and will change, support mp3 is not a thing of secondary importance and usefulness an important for building the user experience, like many other things absent of arduor
