| Summary | 0010023: Add input/output preset map for simplified collaboration and input/output assignment | ||||
| Description | When evaluating the use of DAW for multitrackrecording during rehearsal, we came across this nice DAW Ardour. In the rehearsal room we could take multitrack recordings ( btw UI24r from Soundcraft works perfect in Linux ) with Ardour easily. For further editing at home I'd like to share the multitrack project/session to bandmates for collaboration, and here the issue starts. Each one naturally has a different 'studio' setup at home, so the input/output assignments have to be done usually track by track. Bringing back the edited session, pain of reassignment starts again. The issue is that you directly assign tracks to physical inputs/outputs. I also recognized, that there are number of tickets related to input/output assignment in the database with issues when reconnecting. I think things can be simplified and issues avoided using a simple architectural change with a hook in software where you load a preset for the assignment for all tracks with a single click. PROPOSAL : add kind of logic layer between tracks and hardware that define a map with logical signals/busses that are assigned to hardware inout/output. Only the logical signal/bus is assigned to your track directly, so Hardware is isolated here. You can have different maps for different studios, that could be imported/exported for a project/session easily. For bandmates this means that they define their custom 'studio map' of 'signal/bus <--> inout/output' only once. Logical names must match of course and just overload existing map when editing at home or somewhere else. In the rehearsal room everything is brought together with reverting to the original preset map. Just writing this I realized that a commercial DAW exactly does this for time now, even in their free releases. | ||||
