Summary0006877: Ardour 4.7 Crashes at Audio/Midi Setup when trying to Start Session
DescriptionArdour 4.7 is crashing at the Audio/MIDI setup screen. After starting Ardour, selecting a recent session and clicking the open button, the Audio/Midi Setup box appears. At this point Ardour does not allow the buffer size to be changed. Moreover, when restarting Ardour, the Audio/MIDI setup screen often shows different values for Buffer size - which still cannot be updated. When verifying that all other options on the Audio/MIDI setup screen are correct, pressing the Start button results in a crash.

Audio System is PortAudio default
Driver is ASIO
Input and Output device are Komplete Audio 6
Sample rate 96 kHz
Buffer size when the session was created was 256 samples. It isn't possible to select this sample since the Buffer size drop down box doesn't function.
Input and Output channels are all available channels
Steps To ReproduceStart Ardour, select the recent session and click open. Attempt to verify that appropriate Audio/MIDI setup options are selected - Buffer size drop down box will not open. Press Start button to reproduce the crash.
Additional InformationI ran Ardour GDB and attached an Ardour-debug log. Let me know if you need additional information. Thank you.

Some soundcards don't let an application change the buffersize or samplerate (only the vendor provided control application can). I don't know if that also applies to the NI interface.

trying "buffered i/O" (checkbox top right) may also help for some USB devices.

Buffered I/O worked. Thanks for your help.

I spoke too soon. Using Buffer I/O does not solve the problem, as Ardour still crashes. When ensuring the appropriate sample rate and buffer size is selected in the NI control panel, and even when the appropriate values match within the Audio/MIDI setup screen, the program crashes with Buffer I/O selected as well as with it non-selected. An additional window pops up stating Failed to open audio device.

It seems that occasionally Ardour will open, but it's not reliable - and I'm not sure what causes the crashes.

..on the off change that "Buffered I/O" was the solution.

Until earlier today (Ardour 4.7-1066-gf2f9c23) it was not correctly remembered.
Before that version one has to toggle that button off/on to actually set it.

Then again it could be a different issue. You said you attached the crash-log, but it's missing here. If the crash persists could you attach it?

I uninstalled 4.7-1003 and installed version 1379. Unfortunately I can't start a new session as the program crashes immediately at the Audio/MIDI setup screen. I attached the log.
