Summary | 0005299: 'Use existing session as template' doesn't work
Description | If I select 'Use existing session as a template' when creating a new session, the following error appears in the log window (a/a.ardour is the session that I chose to use as a template, b the name I chose for the new session): [ERROR]: Could not open session template /home/colinf/ardour3-sessions/a/a.ardour/a.ardour.template for reading Then, behind the log window, there's a dialog that says: Session "/home/colinf/ardour3-sessions/b (snapshot b)" did not load successfully Click the Refresh button to try again. Clicking 'Refresh' just takes me back to the opening page of the startup dialog.
Additional Information | As far as I can tell, this happens independently of the contents of the session to be used as a template: at least, it fails even when that session has just been newly-created and saved without further changes.

I know it has been a while since this was reported but I just tried this in 4.2 and master@b08fd648 and it seems to be working correctly now. please confirm if you can. thanks. |

The option to use an existing session as a template seems to have disappeared in current git. Is there a trick to make it come back so that I can test? |
|
I'm not sure. I was testing Session -> Save Template and then use Session -> New -> Use this Template which seems to work correctly. Was there other functionality that has been removed/disabled since this bug was reported. I noticed a few fixes in the last year or so in the git history related to saving/loading templates so I thought It would be worth confirming it was fixed |

Ah, OK. There used to be an option when creating a new session to 'Use existing session as template', which was supposed to do exactly that, saving you the steps of having to open the session that you wanted to use as a template, saving a template, and then creating the new session from that template. That's what didn't work for me. That feature was actually removed in 04d66a9e, back in September 2013; I'm not sure exactly why. I suppose the new 'Save as...' | 'Newly-saved session should be empty' covers a similar sort of use-case, though there's still the step of opening the session I want to use as a template first. |
|
So can we close this report then as it seems to be working as intended currently. Changes to the current behaviour should be outlined in another report IMO. |
|
Closing, since the feature no longer exists. I'll make a new issue for the feature request to reinstate it. |
