BenLoftis2 on #ardour-osx took a quick look and said, "there's a font fix that's been checked in for testing, but I don't know for sure that this is the problem it fixes"

Thank you! :-) I can confirm (at least on my PPC) that removing the fontconfig cache causes ardour to start without error for both Ardour release 2.8.3/5763 and the testing build I tried 2.8.4/6006. I have fontconfig@2.7.3 installed via macports. I also have Inkscape.app@0.46 installed in /Applications. After removing the font cache once, Ardour starts no matter what. Ardour creates 4 font cache entries. Inkscape throws an unhelpful popup (and doesn't start) if the ~/.fontconfig directory doesn't exist, but works fine if the directory is created. Inkscape creates 20 font cache entries. Thus, if you end up having to give these instructions to upgrading mac users, the command should be: rm -r ~/.fontconfig/* The two apps do not appear to interfere with one another at all after the font cache was removed once. It does not matter which order I start them in, and they can run at the same time without problem. I can do my work now, so I'm happy -- just let me know who to pay my pledged $5 once the issue is resolved. I'm also happy to do further testing if anyone needs it. Cheers!
